Tips and Tricks POSTPONED!
We’re postponing the trips and tricks because we have asked Julian Thomas, Bookbinder and Head of Conservations at the National Library of Wales to joins us for wine, cheese, snacks and chit chat. Location will be the Folger, however time and date are to be determined. Most likely will happen the week of June 22. Stop by here for more information and watch for email from gbwpotomacchapter@gmail.com.

Julian served a four-year apprenticeship at the National Library of Wales, working under John Bowen who had been trained by George Fisher at The Gregynog Press. He has been Head of the Conservation Section at the library since 1980 and has a workshop at home where he undertakes commissioned fine-bindings and some book conservation.
Julian was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1996 and has exhibited and been commissioned both at home and abroad. He is an accredited member of the Institute of Paper Conservation and of the National Council for Conservation-Restoration.
Hello Potomac Chapter!
We here GBW Potomac Headquarters are pleased to announce the first summer Tips and Tricks session Thursday, June 25th at the Folger.
Our illustrious Chair Person, Renate Mesmer, will be demonstrating the construction of the famous “Phase Box with Mylar spine.” According to Renate this box is widely used at the Folger. The clear spine allows curators to look at the books while still protecting the object – making both Curators and Conservators happy!
Renate is also offering to help people make their own box as she demonstrates. Willing box makers need to bring their own book and $5 to cover the cost of materials. Participation is limited to the first 6 eager members who RSVP and request to make the box, though we have more space for those who just plan to observe.
So, come beat the heat at the next GBW meeting and go home with a box. Refreshments served at 5:30, box making at 6:00.
