You are invited to spend a day in Gettysburg, PA!
Saturday, November 14, 2009. 9:30am to 5pm
See PDF File in the “Files for Download” box to the right for more information!
Gettysburg is a charming and historic Pennsylvania town less than two hours from Washington, DC and Baltimore. In spite of its small size it is teaming with activity. It is host to two colleges, a Lutheran Seminary, and the Gettysburg National Military Park, which includes a brand new Visitors Center and Museum and thousands of acres of battlefield land. We would like to invite members of the Potomac Chapter to come spend the day with us.
We have planned the following activities:
*A visit to Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library to see items from Special Collections including an exhibit curated by Chris Ameduri “Brittle Books and Broken Bindings, Saving Gettysburg Colleges Early Treasures”. An exhibit of artist’s books is also available to view on the first floor of the Library.
*An opportunity to see the newly restored enormous Cyclorama painting by Paul Philippoteaux. Sue Boardman, of the Gettysburg Foundation will talk to us about the restoration and give us a rare opportunity to walk behind the painting to see its structural components. The painting was restored by Olin Conservation of Great Falls, VA between 2004 and 2008.
*A visit to the home and studio of Sheila Waters, renowned calligrapher and wife of Peter Waters, former Conservation Officer at the Library of Congress.
Cost for the day will be $20 to cover entrance to the Visitor Center and refreshments. Lunch is not included but is available in the Visitors Center canteen (it usually runs about $7-10 for lunch) or you can pack your own.
Please RSVP to Vicki Lee at (708) 334-7170 or (410) 260-6440 by October 30th to discuss transportation needs.
In addition, If anyone does plan to stay overnight I would be happy to host a dinner at my home adjacent to Gettysburg College either Friday or Saturday evening depending on what works for people. Please RSVP to Mary Wootton at marypwo@hotmail.com if you can come and let me know which night would work best for you.
